THIS WEEK IN GOD.... First up from the God Machine this week is an interesting meeting at the White House, which may have been a first.

Last week, the Secular Coalition for America, an atheist advocacy group, held its first-ever individual face-to-face with the White House. Ron Millar, the coalition's acting director, told POLITICO that he met with Paul Montero, Obama's religious liaison in the White House Office of Public Engagement.

Obama "is opening a little door to include us in, which we are very appreciative of," says Millar, who says he anticipates a number of additional such meetings with the administration.

Among the concerns Millar says he touched on was proselytizing in the U.S. military: "That is something we really want to follow up with this administration, because we have not seen much there."

There have been organizations representing atheists around for decades, but I don't recall ever hearing about one being invited to the White House for a chat.

Given that White House officials have also recently engaged plenty of religious groups and communities, from across the theological spectrum -- even a Focus on the Family representative extended generous praise -- it's only fair that they also sit down with an atheist advocacy group.

That said, this seems like an encouraging development concerning the interests of atheists. Historically, administrations would keep a group like the Secular Coalition for America at arm's length. What's more, a meeting like this, not too long ago, may have sparked a controversy.

That this meeting occurred, the group raised legitimate concerns, and no one freaked out about their discussion, looks like a positive development as it relates to diversity of spiritual thought.

Also from the God Machine this week:

* James Dobson chatted this week with Tim Goeglein, a former special assistant to President Bush before he resigned in disgrace following a plagiarism controversy, about the former president's legacy. Goeglein told Dobson that George W. Bush "was was the instrument in God's hand as the leader of the free world."

* The Rev. Rob Schenck, perhaps best known for applying anointing oil to the door leading to the Inaugural portico in January, has now been given permission to anoint the doors to the Senate hearing room where Sonia Sotomayor will face questions from the Judiciary Committee in July. I'm not sure who gave Schenck permission to do this.

* And in Kentucky, one Louisville pastor has decided to encourage his congregation to "strap on holsters and bring their weapons to church." Pastor Ken Pagano of New Bethel Church told ABC News, "As a Christian pastor I believe that without a deep-seeded belief in God and firearms that this country would not be here." Paul Helmke, of the president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, noted, "Christ tells us to put down the sword and this pastor seems to be encouraging them to take up the sword."

Balança Cuba que eu quero ver Cuba balançar...

Votação histórica na OEA...Cuba, finalmente, recebe aceitação para a entrada...Degelo no continente americano...nova política da Era Obama e....Cuba não aceitou o ingresso!!!! Isto mesmo: negou-se a tomar parte na organização dos Capachos dos EUA.
Hum. Semanas atrás postei a famosa Carta de 77 dos dissidentes Tchecos. Esta Carta nasceu dos tratados assinados pela, então, URSS e satélites, com conteúdo de direitos humanos. O regime não esperava que os dissidentes se aproveitassem dos documentos de direito internacional para esgarçar brechas no sistema totalitário.
A coisa parece se repetir agora. Com a adesão, Cuba teria que manifestar-se sobre documentos da OEA sobre direitos humanos, liberdades, garantias, pluralismo e outras coisas mais. Melhor ficar com a retórica antiamericana de antes...

Só para lembrar....

Pessoal, só para lembrar, morreram muitos brasileiros no nordeste, durante as cheias do semestre. Não é só no voo da Air France, ok?

Dunga, Soneca e outros anões

Engraçado...ano passado e eu, aqui no blogue, dizendo que nada havia no querer massacrar o técnico brasileiro, o Dunga. Vários anões pensavam em crucificá-lo. Como sempre, a crítica mais despropositada e aquela que eu considero a demonstração cabal de desconhecimento sobre o futebol: ele é retranqueiro!!! Quando ouvir isso, amigo, tenha certeza, o cara que fala nada sabe de futebol. Pois bem, passado o ano, seleção praticamente classificada, espocam foguetes em homenagem a Dunga. Como? Ele não era retranqueiro????

recorde e repetição

Estou em estado de polícia. Há exatos 5 dias deixei de tomar conhecimento de manchetes dos jornais brasileiros (já não os lia na inteireza, por absoluto desprezo pelo sensacionalismo). Esta repulsa deveu-se ao ver, logo no início, as insinuações sobre o acidente aéreo do voo Air France. Quando vi os primeiros informes, algo de náusea apareceu e resolvi precaver-me de explorações idiotas, tentativas de achar sentido político na tragédia, redundâncias e apostas sob a aura de conhecimento técnico, morbidez travestida de informaçAo. Por quantos dias durará o meu isolamento? Posso dizer que nada mudou, de significativo, no que vi hoje, noite adentro. É melhor esquecer....

Decisão do STJ - a esposa

O STJ decidiu que a esposa, largada no tempo por nova relação estabelecida pelo cônjuge, deve ser citada em ação de partilha de bens. Interessante por procurar resguardar direitos de quem ficou para trás, muitas vezes traída....

Impressões ruins...

Confesso ter séries restrições ao som produzido por duplas pop rotuladas como sertanejas. Hoje, domingo, fiquei perplexo ante o total descolamento do mínimo de qualidade que se pode esperar. Ouvi uma dupla sertaneja chamada GUILHERME e SANTIAGO. Gente, é um horror. Aproveito o blogue justamente por não ter conhecido, antes, algo de tão baixa qualidade. Letras óbvias, músicas que se arrastam de coisas extraídas de restaurantes mexicanos e guarânias, repetidas à exaustão, temperadas com batidas country. Como pode????

Carradine e a infância

Morreu Carradine. Ainda tive tempo de vê-lo no excelente Kill Bill, morrendo com o golpe mortal desferido pela vingança da Uma. Para quem não entendeu, toda a geração que ligava a TV nos 70 e 80, havia o seriado Kungfu, estrelado pelo ator. Eu confesso ter ficado impressionado com aquele sábio andando pelos EUA, numa mistura de faroeste com filmes orientais de luta. Cheguei a brincar algumas vezes, na rua, como se fosse o hábil lutador. Fiquei triste...

A carta de 1977, república Tcheca

Interessante analisar a Carta de 77, publicada pelos dissidentes do comunismo tcheco. Para quem acha que documentos de direito internacional têm pouco significado, lembrem-se que a Carta foi editada no pós Helsinque. Interessante para a discussão sobre desobediência civil. Para o acesso ver:

O frio no cerrado

Temperaturas baixas no cerrado...até parece que o sul brasileiro veio para o centro do Brasil.
Neste tempo frio, nada melhor que bolo de chocolate com leite. Atenção: o que se vende por chocolate, muitas vezes, não é chocolate, ou seja, compre o legítimo cacau da Garoto, sem açúcar, e meta a mão na massa. O bolo fica negro, bem escuro.
